The trends seem to come in waves. Star Trek being, well Star Trek, it also does this on a species level with Romulan being the shadows of the Vulcans, and on dimensional level, the Mirror Universe being he shadow of the Star Trek 'verse. The Cube's mysteriousbioskop headed to the Star and Shadow in Newcastle on Thursday 21st January to screen a programme we put together of artist's film, rare documentary, and short fiction called WE ARE FAMILY. I've had The Shadow and the Star, by Laura Kinsale in my TBR for some time, but I dug it out immediately when I read Jorie's post about it at her blog. My fave Kinsales are The Shadow and the Star, For My Lady's Heart, and Shadow Heart. But if you take a look at the YA shelves, you'll notice quite a few words in heavy rotation: shadow, bone, fire, crown, dark, stars. I wanted a flat glittery star, not a puffy noisy star. For the jewels on the star, I used a lot of small circles, filled with white, plus Inner Glow, Satin, and Drop Shadow effects. The Shadow Fold, a swathe of impenetrable darkness, crawling with monsters that feast on human flesh, is slowly destroying the once-great nation of Ravka.
